Early Life
Ranveer Singh, born on July 6, 1985, in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, India, is the son of Anju and Jagjit Singh Bhavnani. His family originally came from Karachi, Pakistan, and relocated to Bombay during the Partition of India. Singh has an older sister named Ritika. Though he had a passion for acting from a young age, he initially chose to pursue his education at H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai, followed by a focus on creative writing. He then moved to the United States and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Telecommunications from Indiana University Bloomington in 2008, where he also took acting classes and minored in theatre. After returning to Mumbai in 2007, Singh worked as a copywriter in advertising while attending auditions. Despite his efforts, he only managed to land very minor roles during this period.
Career
In 2010, Singh auditioned for a leading role in Maneesh Sharma’s romantic comedy “Band Baaja Baaraat.” His impressive performance won him the role of Bittoo Sharma. Upon its release, the film became a sleeper hit, earning Singh widespread praise. He won the Best Male Debut award at the annual Filmfare Awards. Following this success, Singh played Ricky Bahl, a con artist in “Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl,” where he exploited the women he dated. In 2013, he starred in the period romance “Lootera,” an adaptation of O. Henry’s short story “The Last Leaf.”
Next, Singh starred opposite Deepika Padukone in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela,” an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” He portrayed Ram, the character based on Romeo. The film received positive reviews and became Singh’s biggest commercial hit at that point, earning him a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actor. In 2014, he starred in the successful box office film “Gunday.”
In 2015, Singh appeared in the comedy-drama “Dil Dhadakne Do.” Although the film did not perform well commercially, Singh’s performance was highly praised. He then starred in “Bajirao Mastani,” receiving rave reviews and winning the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. In 2016, Singh featured in the comedy-romance “Befikre” and later appeared in the period drama “Padmaavat” in 2018. “Padmaavat” was the most expensive Hindi film ever made at the time with a production budget of $25 million and grossed over $71 million. Singh’s performance earned him the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.
