Early Life
Jason Statham was born on July 26, 1967, in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, England. He spent his childhood in the coastal town of Great Yarmouth. His mother, Eileen, was a dancer, while his father, Barry, was a street vendor. Statham played football during his time at the local grammar school. Initially, he aimed for a career in diving and spent twelve years as a member of Britain’s National Diving Squad. He represented the British Olympic team in Seoul, Korea, in 1988 and competed for England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. However, after disappointing results in both the Olympic Trials and Championships, Statham shifted his focus to acting and modeling.
Acting Career
In 1998, an agent discovered Jason, and his on-camera career quickly took off. Early in his career, he did some modeling for the clothing brand French Connection. This led to being spotted by Guy Ritchie, who cast him in the film “Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.” This film grossed over $80 million at the box office and launched Jason’s Hollywood career. He collaborated with Guy Ritchie again in 2000, playing the role of Turkish in “Snatch.” In this film, he acted alongside Brad Pitt and Benicio del Toro, and it also earned over $80 million at the box office.
Throughout the early 2000s, Statham appeared in various films, including “The One” and “Ghosts of Mars.” However, it was the action film “The Transporter” that made him a household name. For this role, he insisted on doing all his own stunts and trained in karate, Wing Chun kung fu, and kickboxing. “The Transporter” was so successful that it spawned two sequels, a reboot, and a television series.
In 2005, Ritchie cast Statham in a lead role again in “Revolver.” Unfortunately, the film was a critical and box office failure. However, in 2008, Statham’s performances in “The Bank Job” and “Death Race” earned him widespread acclaim and solidified his status as a full-fledged action star.
In 2010, Jason Statham starred in “The Expendables,” an action-packed ensemble film featuring Sylvester Stallone and Mickey Rourke. The movie debuted at the top spot in the U.S., UK, China, and India. Following this, in 2011, Statham took on a role in “The Mechanic,” which received positive reviews. He returned to British cinema with his role in the police drama “Blitz.” During this period, he also appeared in “The Italian Job” and “Cellular,” portraying the main antagonist in both films. However, his next film, “Killer Elite,” was critically panned and failed to recoup its budget. In 2012, Statham reprised his role for the sequel to “The Expendables” and appeared again in “The Expendables 3” in 2014. Despite negative reviews, both sequels were box office hits. Statham showcased his comedic talent in the action-comedy “Spy,” alongside an all-star cast including Jude Law, Melissa McCarthy, and Rose Byrne. For his performance, he was nominated for a Critic’s Choice Award for Best Comedic Actor.
In late 2016, the follow-up to his 2011 film “The Mechanic” premiered under the title “Mechanic: Resurrection,” achieving significant financial success by grossing over $109.4 million globally. In February 2017, he teamed up with Gal Gadot for a Wix.com advertisement during Super Bowl LI, which garnered over 22 million user impressions. “Spy 2” was confirmed in 2018; however, director Paul Feig mentioned that the studio showed no interest in pursuing the project. Statham starred as Captain Jonas Taylor in “The Meg,” an action horror film released in August 2018.
Statham has also appeared in three “Fast and Furious” films, reprising his role as Deckard Shaw in “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.” His performance received critical acclaim, and the film became the tenth highest-grossing movie of 2019. He returned to the franchise in 2021’s “F9” and 2023’s “Fast X.” Additionally, in 2023, Statham reprised his role as Jonas Taylor in “Meg 2: The Trench.”
